Skate the Lake set to roll through Tahoe City

TAHOE CITY, Calif. — Boarding for Breast Cancer is launching its Summer Skate Series this weekend in Tahoe City, bringing the 19th annual Skate the Lake back to the area.

The 28-mile skate-bike-roll fundraising event will take place Sunday, and will feature hundreds of skaters making their way along the paved trails on Tahoe’s west shore.

This year, Skate the Lake will begin with a Community Celebration at Commons Beach in Tahoe City on Saturday with a registration party ahead of the event. Tahoe bands Honey Vixen, Bear Whiskey, Fragile Like a Bomb and more will play live music. There will be food and drinks, yoga, a silent auction and a raffle Registration for Skate the Lake will be available. The even will run from noon to 7 p.m.

Skate the Lake co-founder Curt Sterner said roughly 70 people have pre-registered for Sunday’s Skate the Lake, and that organizers expect another 50 skaters or so will register during Saturday’s party.

The 28-mile Skate the Lake starts the following morning 7:30 a.m. at 64-Acres Park where skaters will check in and load a shuttle to Ed Z’berg – Sugar Pine Point State Park. From there, skaters will make their way along paved trails to The Village at Palisades Tahoe, which will also be the drop-in point for the shorter eight-mile ride. From Olympic Valley, skaters will ride back along the trails to Tahoe City and the finish at Commons Beach.

An after party and awards ceremony will follow and will coincide with a live performance by Poor Man’s Whiskey as part of the Concerts at Commons Beach series.

The two-day event supports Boarding for Breast Cancer’s mission of staying healthy and active. Funds raised benefit the nonprofit’s education, prevention and survivorship programs.

“We’ll have a lot more survivors this year,” said Sterner. “That’s something new. There’s probably going to be like six or seven survivors that will be there that I know of.”

The Skate the Lake fundraising goal is $50,000. To register, all skaters must fundraise a minimum of $50. Registrants will receive an event t-shirt, a goodie bag and raffle tickets. Participants will earn ten extra raffle tickets for every $100 they raise and will receive Yeti drinkware for raising more than $150. Prizes will be awarded to the top three fundraisers in both individual and team categories.

Participants who can’t be there in person can join Skate the Lake virtually by registering, then cruising their favorite, local path or trail and posting to social media with the hashtag #SkatetheLake and tagging @b4bc. T-shirts will be mailed directly to participants and virtual raffle tickets will be awarded for every $10 raised.
